Berkeley Public Library and 18 Reasons presents "Cooking Matters at Home," a YouTube Live cooking/nutrition class open to all on Friday October 23, 2020 from 4:00pm-5:00pm.

Cooking Matters is helping end hunger by inspiring people to make healthy, affordable food choices.  They teach people with limited food budgets to shop for and cook healthy meals.  In this introductory class we will be learning some breakfast recipes, Berry Compote and Banana Oatmeal Pancakes.  If you would like to cook along, you will need the following.

For the Berry Compote recipe:

• 2 cups frozen mixed berries
• 3 Tbsp water
• ¼ cup sugar
• 2 tsp lemon juice

And for the Banana Oatmeal Pancakes recipe:

• 3 ripe bananas
• 2 eggs
• ½ cup quick oats
• ½ cup whole wheat flour
• 1 tsp baking powder
• ½ teaspoon salt

Optional toppings:
• Fresh fruits (berries, stone fruit, more bananas)
• Maple syrup
• Low fat yogurt
• Honey

Check out these two archived demonstations to see a sample of what we will be doing: Video one, and Video two.

After this class, interested viewers are then encouraged to sign-up for a free course of 3 interactive, once-per-week supplemental classes using Zoom.  Dates are to be determined.  In these auxiliary classes participants will: 1) Practice using recipe frameworks; 2) Cook healthy and affordable meals for their family from the comfort of their own kitchens; and 3) Discuss ingredient substitutions.

Ingredients will be provided for the additional classes to be held in the future, so please plan on making an appointment to visit the library to collect these.
