African American Histories and Futures

Mildred Howard with circular art scuplture

Black History Month was established to draw attention to the contributions of African Americans to the United States throughout history. The celebration honors all Black individuals, from the enslaved people who were brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans currently residing in the United States. The national theme for 2024 is "Black Americans and the Arts." Join Berkeley Public Library in recognizing the accomplishments of Black Americans, both renowned and unknown, and assist us in commemorating their achievements.
