Scary Stories, Past and Present - LOREN RHOADS

Orange text with program name on purple background with illustrations of both featured authors (Loren Rhoads and Shirley Jackson)
October 24, 2022 - 12:00pm-1:30pm (ended)

Join us for a spine-chilling storytime to get you in the Halloween spirit! First, hear local author Loren Rhoads read her short story, "In the Pines," a tale that's short but definitely not sweet, then participate in a live Q&A with the author. Next, listen to the beginning of Shirley Jackson's classic masterpiece The Haunting of Hill House as read by David Warner. (Rhoads' collection Unsafe Words, which features "In the Pines," is coming soon to BPL, but for now you can always check out her fantastic nonfiction work 199 Cemeteries to See Before You Die.)

This is the second installment of Scary Stories, Past and Present, a series of virtual storytimes for adults where we pair modern and classic horror stories. Each new story is read by its author, followed by a short Q&A where you ask the questions. The golden oldies are all from BPL's media collection, especially the vinyl records found on the 5th Floor at Central (reopening in November!). Tune in for more scary stories on October 31 (see event calendar for more info).
