Lose Hate Not Weight: A Critical Examination of Diet Culture @Claremont

In this 60 minute lecture Virgie Tovar – author, expert and lecturer – offers a primer on the history and sociopolitical realities of our cultural obsession with weight loss. The story of modern day “Diet Culture” didn’t begin with juicing or cleanses, but rather over 200 years ago with the inventor of the graham cracker.

Tovar is the editor of Hot & Heavy: Fierce Fat Girls on Life, Love and Fashion and one of the nation’s leading experts on fat discrimination and body image.

The Ohlone Community @ Central CMR

Richard Schwartz will give an illustrated talk on the hidden Indian Life in Berkeley and the evidence surrounding it. He will describe how the discovery and protection of artifacts and history combine as a powerful tool to begin to understand the extent Native Americans lived within what became the city of Berkeley. He will demonstrate how a culture can be learned or lost by the efforts and actions of current residents.

Saturday May 28 1-2:30 p.m. 3rd Floor Community Meeting Room
