Resumes: Planting Seeds in Your Resume that Prompt Interviewers to Ask Questions YOU Want to Answer

Most of us have met with interviewers who are have a knack for bringing out our best achievements. They get the conversation rolling and we engage in discussion that leaves us eager to accept an offer. We will discuss ways to preload your resume to increase the possibility of positive interview experiences. We will examine ways you can do this including: (1) Considering changes in practices over time in the Experience section of your resume. You are no longer restricted to conversation-deadening bullet points about duties and processes. Today’s best practices put the spotlight on your achievements, results, problems solved, challenges met, differences made, and enduring impact--as well as your enthusiasm; (2) Adding scenarios that show you in action, being effective, managing situations, and meeting needs. These can become sub-bullet points in your resume that amplify needs met and, as appropriate, build suspense; (3) Using the bullet point syntax that begins with “what,” a result you achieved, followed by “how,” basically your actions that accounted for the beneficial impact you produced.
