Senior Shine: The Golden Years

Jay Lotus Allen

Artwork will be on display through July, 2025 on the 5th floor of the Central Library. Join us on Monday, July 7th at 5:30pm for an opening reception with the artist Jay Lotus Allen.

Senior Shine: The Golden Years project is a year-long body of work completed in 2024-25. These works are a merger of the figurative and abstract, hybridizations inspired by artist Jay Lotus Allen's participation in activities at the North Berkeley Senior Center and daily walks in the surrounding neighborhood. They weave together a visual narrative of the past year.

Allen is a local, multidisciplinary artist and a Berkeley Civic Art Commission Artist's Award Recipient in 2021 and 2024. They enjoy drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, video, journaling, poetry, and especially experimentation in mixed media. In the Senior Shine project, she explores the interplay of media, form and color inherent in mixed media. Her work is a complicated mix of cultural expressions and emergent realities, personal story, landscape, and our human and non-human relations. She is an intuitive creator and allows her sensitivity to guide her artistic process.

Senior Shine: The Golden Years project is sponsored by the Berkeley Civic Arts Commission, North Berkeley Senior Center, and the Berkeley Public Library.
