Artist Bio

Nimisha Doongarwal is a Bay Area–based mixed media artist whose work explores identity, belonging, and cultural connection through layered visual storytelling. Born and raised in India, Nimisha draws on her experience as an immigrant to the United States, blending painting, collage, textiles, and traditional patterns to create textured works that reflect the complexity of personal and collective histories. Each piece is a conversation between memory and place, carrying echoes of her heritage while responding to the communities and environments she now calls home.
Her art is rooted in the belief that creativity can bridge divides, sparking dialogue, nurturing
empathy, and fostering a sense of unity. Nimisha often works with layered surfaces and intricate details to symbolize the multiplicity of human experience. She draws inspiration from everyday interactions, cultural traditions, and the resilience she sees in the people around her. Many of her works incorporate collaged elements from Indian textiles, archival imagery, and hand-printed patterns, creating visual spaces that honor both individuality and shared humanity. Nimisha’s work has been exhibited widely, including at the de Young Museum, San Francisco International Airport, SF District Attorney's Office, and the Museum of Northern California Art. Her practice extends beyond the gallery, with public art projects and community-centered initiatives that invite dialogue and participation. She has been featured in publications such as Forbes, ArtMarket, ArtSeen, and Sfumato Art, and is committed to using her platform to highlight underrepresented voices and stories. She is a current recipient of Berkeley City Individual Artist Grant.
