Strong Girls Rule Film Discussion Series: Maidentrip Screening at  the West Branch
of the Berkeley Public Library



Berkeley, August 15, 2014 – Berkeley Public Library presents a free three-part community engagement film series called Strong Girls Rule celebrating women in sport and highlighting some of our exceptional local athletes and women’s sports programs.

The series opens on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 3 pm, with a screening of Maidentrip, followed by discussion and Q&A with Stephanie Evans, Commodore of Berkeley’s Cal Sailing Club. Maidentrip is a feature length documentary about the inspirational journey of Laura Dekker, who, at the age of 14, became the youngest person to sail alone around the world.

Join the West Branch Teen Librarian at 2:00 pm for a sailing movie tie-in with an hour of nautical knot tying before the screening. This event takes place at the newly renovated West Branch at 1125 University Avenue. The West Branch is located at 1125 University Avenue, Berkeley CA 94702 and is open: Monday, 10:00 am-6:00 pm, Tuesday and Wednesday, 10:00 am-8:00 pm, Thursday 12 noon -8:00 pm, and Friday and Saturday, 10:00 am-6:00 pm.

The second part of the series takes place on Saturday, September 6, at 3:00 pm, at the South Branch, 1901 Russell Street with a screening of the short documentary, I Just Wanna Ball (30 min.) followed by conversation and Q&A with the film’s director, Robert Bowden and members of the McClymonds High School Lady Warriors basketball team. Attendees will be moved and empowered by the determination and focus of these positive and powerful young women.

The series concludes on Saturday, September 13, at 3:00 pm in the 3rd floor Community Meeting Room of the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street with a screening of the newly released documentary Derby Crazy Love (68 min.) directed by Canadian filmmakers, Maya Gallus and Justine Pimlott.
