December 2017

Crowd Pleasers of the Great Depression

Friday, December 1 Gold Diggers of 1933 (1933 / 97 min. / NR / no CC)

Although this pre-code film was not censored by Hollywood, it was one of the first to use alternate footage to satisfy certain state censorship boards. Uncensored prints were risqué in their day, with near nudity featured in several of Busby Berkeley’s stunning production numbers. Largely because of them, this is a must-see. The plot concerns struggling actresses trying to make it while shows are closing all over town. Ruby Keeler, Joan Blondell and Dick Powell star.

Friday, December 8 My Man Godfrey (1936 / 94 min. / NR / no CC)

While looking for a “Forgotten Man” for her scavenger hunt, an heiress (Carole Lombard) meets a man (William Powell) who lives among the down-and-out in a hobo camp. He’s outraged that she’s making light of people trying to get by, and tells her off. Embarrassed, she offers him a job as her family’s butler. He accepts, setting in motion a comedy about class that is just a little bit more than that. The American Film Institute named it one of the 100 funniest comedies ever.

Friday, December 15   Mr. Deeds Goes to Town    (1936 / 115 min. / Approved / no CC)

Longfellow Deeds (Gary Cooper) plays the tuba, runs a tallow works and writes poetry for greeting cards. When an uncle leaves him twenty million dollars, he reluctantly leaves Mandrake Falls to see to his uncle’s affairs in New York City, where an ambitious reporter (Jean Arthur) strikes up a relationship with him, neglecting to tell him what she does for a living. Soon he’s being ridiculed in the papers—and he’s falling in love with her. Directed by Frank Capra.

Friday December 22 The Thin Man (1934 / 91 min. / NR / no CC)

Based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett, this movie capitalizes on extraordinary chemistry between the two leads, Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy). It’s said Hammett replicated the qualities of his relationship with Lillian Hellman in the Nick & Nora pairing—there is droll delivery of clever dialogue, certainly. The plot hardly matters. It calls detective Nick out of retirement to investigate the disappearance of a former client. The American Film Institute named this one of the 100 funniest comedies of all time.

January 2018
Movies Look at Themselves

Friday, January 5 Singin’ in the Rain 1952 / 104 min. / G / CC

Although not a smash at the time of its release, Singin’ in the Rain has since secured its reputation as one of the best Hollywood musicals ever. Set during the chaotic transition from silent to sound films in the late 1920s, the film made an instant star of Debbie Reynolds, who played a newcomer doing voiceovers for a silent film actress whose brassy Brooklyn accent just would not do. Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor wore out their dancing shoes.

Friday, January 12 Sullivan’s Travels 1941 / 90 min. / NR / CC

The Sullivan of the title (Joel McCrea) is a Hollywood director who’s dissatisfied directing comedy. He wants to make a socially relevant drama. To that end, he takes to the road to find out what’s going on in the real world--and meets reality all along the way. The film, something of a cult thing for movie people, was written and directed by Preston Sturges, a master of satire. His other films include The Lady Eve, The Great McGinty and Miracle of Morgan’s Creek.

Friday, January 19 Sunset Boulevard 1950 / 110 min./  NR / CC

The great Billy Wilder co-wrote and directed this film noir focused on faded actress Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson) and her young screenwriter gigolo, Joe Gillis (William Holden). In her dilapidated Sunset Blvd. mansion, she draws him into her rich, self-centered fantasy life. Legendary director Erich von Stroheim plays her forbidding servant. The American Film Institute ranked Sunset Boulevard 12th on its 1998 list of the best American films.

Friday, January 26 Cinema Paradiso 1988 / 155 min. / R / CC

After 30 years away, famous Italian film director Salvatore Di Vita returns to the town of his birth. He goes for the funeral of Alfredo, once the projectionist at the town's Cinema Paradiso. In flashbacks, Di Vita remembers his six-year-old self’s friendship with Alfredo—the beginning of his love for film. Paradiso won both the Academy Award  and the Golden Globe for best foreign language film as well as the Grand Prix du Jury at Cannes. Directed by Giuseppe Tornatore.
