Resume Checkup: Success Paths and Booby Traps

Many effective job seekers improve their chances by relying on a mix of approaches. They adopt new possibilities and reject those they find lacking. We will discuss useful and not-so-useful tactics as well as cover misconceptions that could hold you back. A job seeker with a full program of outreach may network, participate in job forums (including online), attend job fairs, check job boards regularly, refine their LinkedIn pages, research job postings, update industry knowledge, learn about prospective employers, read articles, prepare for interviews, and seek feedback. Sound time consuming? Are effective job seekers consistently looking for information and insights? Yes—to both questions. The less effective job seeker, by contrast, tends to be passive and restrict activity to a narrow channel of exposure closed off from the vibrant buzz of news and changes in the job scene. This can lead into booby traps. We’ll cover a sampling of those, too.
