hula from A Place In the Middle
June 11, 2016 - 2:00pm-3:15pm (ended)

Ages 10-18. Join the Berkeley Public Library and Our Family Coalition for a showing and discussion of the movie A Place in the Middle. A Place in the Middle is a documentary about a young Hawaiian student who dreams of leading the boys-only hula troupe, and is supported by her teacher, who understands first-hand what it is like to be "in the middle" of kāne (male) and wahine (female), and by the Hawaiian tradition of embracing those who embody both male and female spirit. It is also a story of colonialism on Hawaii and the reclamation and preservation of Hawaiian culture.

The 20 minute documentary will be followed by discussion led by Rick Oculto from Our Family Coalition. Ages 10-18.
