The team of Ismail Merchant and James Ivory made historical costume dramas. When embarking on A Room with a View they had already made a handful of such films on a small scale because costume dramas are expensive to make. They thought this film required European location shooting and top-notch cinematography, so they sought several small corporate investors and assembled a comparatively small costume drama budget of $3,000,000. A thumbnail of the plot is this: In 1907, during the Edwardian era, a British young woman (Helena Bonham Carter) takes a trip to Europe in the company of a spinster guardian (Maggie Smith). Romantic adventures ensue. Judi Dench and Daniel Day-Lewis also star. The film receives universal acclaim for its acting and cinematography.
