Directed by Jane Campion
An apparently timid 19th century mute woman (Holly Hunter) agrees to an arranged marriage with a wealthy New Zealand landowner (Sam Neill). She brings her young daughter (Anna Paquin) and her piano with her. As time goes by, the raw emotion she’s able to express using her instrument causes a workman on the estate (Harvey Keitel) to fall in love with her. Roger Ebert says, “It is one of those rare movies that is not just about a story, or some characters, but about a whole universe of feeling.” The performances are extraordinary.
