Sidney Poitier : In the Heat of the Night 1967 / 110 min. / NR
It’s 1966. A white man has been murdered in Sparta, Mississippi. When the police settle on a traveler named Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier) as their suspect, they‘re pissed to find that Tibbs is a homicide detective from Philadelphia. While verifying Tibbs’s story, the police chief (Rod Steiger) asks Tibbs’s boss to let Tibbs help with their case. The result is Poitier’s painfully taut portrayal of a smart, wary Black cop dodging resentments in a racist southern town.
