Set in the Weimar Republic starting in 1931, the film depicts the rise of the Nazi Party in Berlin. The Kit Kat Club’s Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey) greets the decadent and the anxious with “Willkommen” and the sultry singing and dancing of Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli in her first singing film role). Brilliantly directed by choreographer Bob Fosse, the film is based on Christopher Isherwood’s Goodbye to Berlin. It won 8 Academy Awards including Best Director and Best Actress. It was groundbreaking in its dark subject matter and literary / musical craft.
