Join us on Zoom for a virtual presentation and discussion with experienced zinesters across California. Learn how these different zine makers create self-published booklets that feature the subjects of: Art & Collage, DIY & How-To, Self-Care, and Comics.

How can you start self-publishing, selling, trading, and sharing your zines? How can you start to find zines to read in your communities? Come ready with your questions related to all things zines!

Thanks to The Friends of the Berkeley Public Library for ensuring that all of our visiting zine-maker artists can join this special presentation and conversation.

Meet the artists in this discussion:

Elise Bernal (she/they) is an artist who works in libraries, and has helped to organize/support Long Beach and Orange County Zine Fests. She makes zines, illustrations, fiber art, and clay creations. Her recent art centers around the realities and tender moments of pain, grief, and death. She hopes by sharing knowledge and creating space to explore these experiences, others can gain tools to understand and navigate them, or at least find a small moment of safety and support. She wants to give a shout-out to her mom, whose life and death continues to inspire her.

Ziba Pérez is a librarian by day DJ by night and zinester for life!
Ziba helped create the first ever circulating zine collection at the Los Angeles Public Library ( LAPL.ORG/ZINES ) in 2017. Previous to that, Ziba was at the Long Beach Public Library in her hometown in California, where she helped create the first ever circulating zine collection there in 2015. Ziba was co-organizer of the Long Beach Zine Fest (2016‒2019) and is now co-organizer of the Los Angeles Zine Fest as of Summer of 2022. Ziba started making #ZEBRARADARZINE instagram.com/zebraradarzine & facebook.com/ZebraRadarZine in 2012 with threeamigospress.tumblr.com when tabling at the first LA Zine Fest in 2012!

Krusty Wheatfield is a cartoonist and multimedia artist based in Oakland, CA. The power of lines and shapes to create stories and connections has guided her throughout her “career”, from getting a masters in comics research in France to curating monthly art shows from inside of a classic car showroom in Oakland. She aims to draw people together in space, literally and figuratively, and see what new situations arise from unpredictable combinations. Her favorite projects include “Fetching” (a dog fashion show), “Future Ruins” a field research comics zine with French artist Sabine Teyssonneyre, multiple newsletters, and creating the A.B.O. Comix newsletter for LGBTQ+ folks in prisons. She loves the crust of bread, and of LIFE!
