Steve Finacom, past President of the Berkeley Historical Society, talks about the evolution of Berkeley’s transit core around Center St & Shattuck Ave, starting in the 1870s with the advent a train station connecting Berkeley with Oakland. Every generation since has seen a new development (evolution) of the area as a “transit hub,” with the idea that the transit station is being built for today and the future. Yet every generation finds it an antiquated mess that needs improvements. Today the Berkeley community is in discussion to yet again redefine the area “for the future” of downtown.
