Celebrate the Tarea Hall Pittman Library's new exterior sign with coffee, cake, and light musical entertainment with jazz musician, Leon Williams.
The library was renamed in 2015, after local civil rights advocate and community resident, Tarea Hall Pittman. Pittman attended Cal, held leadership roles in the NAACP, and worked to desegregate the Oakland Fire Department. These are just a few of her achievements in social justice. South Berkeley community resident, Charles Austin (1939-2017), advocated and organized a petition to rename the library from the South Branch Library to the Tarea Hall Pittman Library, which he accomplished successfully in 2015.
This September, the library installed a beautifully fabricated sign in honor of the library's namesake. Please join us for a casual community get-together with cake and coffee on Saturday, November 18, at 12:30 PM, to celebrate the library's enhancement and to honor Mr. Austin's legacy.
