The Berkeley Public Library invites you to a special dance performance by the master and student artists of the Thai Cultural Council. On Saturday, May 21, at 3:00pm the artists of the Thai Cultural Council (TCC) will share present traditional and folk Thai dances with the musical accompaniment of TCC’s classical band at the Claremont Branch Library. This program is part of the Berkeley Public Library’s celebration and TCC's initiative to support positive cultural exchange between audiences in the United States. Berkeley, April 25, 2016—Berkeley Public Library is thrilled to offer a new online resource for kids and their caregivers. Berkeley Public Library’s children’s collections are now searchable with the phrase “equal read.” Equal Read’s engaging and highly recommended book selections feature a broadly diverse collection of characters that appeal to young readers. “By partnering with Equal Read, library users can now more easily find a wide diversity of books in our collections. This is a wonderful, new opportunity for us to better serve our community,” said Acting Deputy Director Sarah Dentan.

Berkeley, CA. April 22, 2016— Earth Day—The West Branch of the Berkeley Public Library has earned two more highly distinguished awards for its environmentally “green” features, the Berkeley Public Library announced today. The Library has recently learned that West Branch has received the highest level certification in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)—Platinum, according to Sarah Dentan, Acting Library Director. This is the first City of Berkeley owned building to achieve this status.

Berkeley CA February 9—Hear Rob Reich and his trio perform music that defies genres on Saturday, March 5th, 2016 at 3:00pm at the Claremont Branch of the Berkeley Public Library, located at 2940 Benvenue at Ashby Avenue. Accordionist, pianist and composer Rob Reich is a standout accordion virtuoso and is well-known for his trio, his original compositions and his work with bands like Tin Hat, Nice Guy Trio and Ben Goldberg School and others.

Berkeley CA-- January 29--Bay Area poet Judy Bebelaar reads her poems, followed by an interview and discussion on Saturday, 2:00 – 3:00pm, February 27th at the Claremont Branch of the Berkeley Public Library. Bebelaar taught in San Francisco public high schools for 37 years, and her students won many writing honors, including eight Scholastic Writing Awards. Bebelaar’s poetry has also won prizes and has been published widely, including in the anthologies The Widows’ Handbook (Kent State University, 2014), Turning a Train of Thought Upside Down (Scarlet Tanager Books, 2012) and River of Earth and Sky (ed. Diane Frank, Blue Light Press, 2015).

Berkeley CA--January 9, 2016—The Berkeley Public Library is offering two chances to hear Berkeley resident Dora Apsan Sorell, a 94 year old survivor of Auschwitz this month. Ms. Sorell is speaking at North Branch on Wednesday, January 13, at 3:30pm and at the Central Library on Saturday, January 30 from 1:00-2:30pm. For questions regarding this program, call 510-981-6123. A retired physician, lecturer and writer, Sorell was born in Sighet, a small town in northern Romania, into a very traditional Jewish family. She graduated high school in 1940 as the occupying Hungarian fascist regime started to persecute the Jews. In 1944 the Nazis occupied Hungary, deporting the entire Jewish population of her town to Auschwitz. Sorrel lost her parents, two brothers and most of her extended family.

The Berkeley Public Library presents this series of four programs which aims to shed light on the experience of creation, including both conscious labors and moments of sudden inspiration.

Berkeley, California (November 6, 2015) – The Berkeley Board of Library Trustees (BOLT) has appointed Beth Pollard as the Interim Director of Library Services, Chair Abigail Franklin announced today. Filling the vacancy from the departure of former Director Jeff Scott in September, Pollard will step in to provide management oversight for the Library as it prepares to recruit a new director.

Author Patty Enrado presents her debut novel, A Village in the Fields, at the Berkeley Public Library on Saturday, December 6, 2015, at 2:00 – 3:30 pm. Enrado reads from her historical novel and discusses the Filipino-American farm workers who sparked the historic Delano Grape Strike in September 1965, which led to the formation of the United Farm Workers union. This FREE program takes place in the 3rd Floor Community Meeting Room of the Central Library.
