Berkeley, September 23, 2015 – Twilight is coming earlier and earlier. Soon Jack o’ lanterns and skeletons will appear on porches. Trick or treating is on kids’ minds, but why should children have all the fun? Adults and teens, come celebrate Halloween at the Berkeley Public Library with a Southern Gothic masterpiece, William Faulkner’s short story, A Rose for Emily. This free performance is on Saturday, October 31 at 3:00pm at Central Library, 2090 Kittredge (at Shattuck) in the fourth floor Story Room.

It is time to gather around our fireplace and hear bone-chilling tales for grown-ups! Berkeley Public Library will be sharing Chilling Tales: A Halloween Story time for Grown-ups twice in October.

Berkeley CA September 25, 2015--The North Branch of the Berkeley Public Library, located at Hopkin and 1170 The Alameda was closed Friday morning to allow for treatment of bedbugs. The Library will remain closed through Monday, September 28, to allow for sustained treatment using heat and steam and is expected to be open as usually at 10L00am Tuesday September 29, 2015.

Berkeley CA. September 3, 2015—Each year the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) presents select museums and libraries with the nation’s highest honor, the National Medal for Museum and Library Service. Congresswoman Barbara Lee (D) from California’s 13th Congressional District recently nominated the Berkeley Public Library for the 2016 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. This annual award is presented in May by the IMLS to underscore the significant contributions that museums and libraries make to their communities.

The Berkeley Public Library announced today that Jeff Scott has officially resigned from his position as Director of Library Services, effective September 8, 2015. “It is with a heavy heart that I tender my resignation as the Director of Library Services of the Berkeley Public Library. I have enjoyed my work here at the library and I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish,” stated Mr. Scott. Jeff Scott has served in the role of Director since November 2014.

Berkeley, CA August 28—Join Berkeley Public Library in celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month (September 15 to October 15, 2015) with Mariachis and more. Hispanic Heritage Month’s roots go back to 1968; it begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period. Columbus Day (also celebrated as Indigenous Peoples' Day or Día de la Raza) is October 12.

Best known for Farm City, an enjoyable and popular book that inspired many families to start urban farmsteading, author Novella Carpenter is making a special visit to the Claremont Branch on Friday, September 4 at 4:00pm. Carpenter will talk about her books and her West Oakland farm. She is the co-author of The Essential Urban Farmer and the author of the acclaimed memoir Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer, which was named by the New York Times as a best book of 2009.
