Starting November 3rd, 2010, the Berkeley Public Library implemented the newest release of the Encore Catalog. These features are intended to give better results, increase use of our article databases, and provide a way to peek into some books using Google Books Preview. Please take a few minutes to learn about them!
Better Search Results
Encore will empower librarians to promote popular titles that can sometimes get buried under new books. This feature is especially helpful with the case of one-word titles that have been out for a while, and have strong popularity. Titles like "Twilight" for example, will appear at the top of the results when a user searches for it. |
Article Search Results In-line With Book Results
The link to "Articles and more" has doubled usage of our most popular article databases. To continue this encoraging trend, Encore will place three article links in-line after the top three book results. Article results will be clearly labelled as such, with links to additonal articles. Furthermore, the format "Articles" will show under the "Format" facet that can be selected, just as you would choose "BOOKS" or "DVD/VCD". (see illustration, right):

Additional Links to Library Resources on Catalog Pages
The new Encore pages allow us to place additional links to help users access these popular library resources:
Google Books Preview from Full Record Display
A link button to "Google Books Preview" will appear on the full record display of some book titles. Google Books Preview is a free service hosted by Google to allow searching, browsing, and viewing of some pages of some books. We hope that the Google Books Preview will stimulate interest in the thousands of books we have on our shelves.

Call Number and ISBN Searching
The Encore search box has always been a keyword search. The new version will begin to also search by call number, ISBN, ISSN, Publisher Number, and other numbers that are in our catalog records.
