Multilingual Resources

The Library has books, magazines, newspapers, films, and music in several languages. The Central Library has books for adults in Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Russian, Spanish, and Urdu. The Children's library has books in some of these languages, too. The Branch libraries have small collections of books in Spanish and Chinese. You can look in the Library's Catalog for books, magazines, and newspapers in these languages. The catalog uses Roman script only. Languages that do not use Roman script are shown there in translation.

Library Catalog

You can look in the Library catalog for books, magazines, newspapers, films and music in many languages. The catalog uses Roman script only. Languages that do not use Roman script are shown there in transliteration. If Berkeley Public Library does not own books in the language you want, you may borrow them from other libraries through Link+ .

Language Line

Berkeley Public Library uses AT&T Language Line to help staff and library users who speak different languages to understand each other. You can ask for help with this service at any of the library's public desks. Staff members may be able to help you in your native language.

Library Collection

Berkeley Public Library has a collection of books, tapes, cds, and videos that can help you learn English. Ask a staff member for help to locate them at your library branch.

Use a Computer

You can also study English through the Library's computer courses at home or school. The Berkeley Public Library also has computers for public use. These computers have Internet access. You must have a Berkeley Public Library card to use our online services and to reserve a computer.

Learning English

Are you looking for more opportunities to learn English? The Berkeley Adult School, Asians for Job Opportunities in the Bay Area and UC Berkeley's English in Action program offer low cost English classes for adults.

Library Cards

To get a library card, you can register at any branch. You need to have picture identification and proof of your California address. Library cards are free. See the rules about borrowing and paying overdue fines.

Special Programs

The library offers many programs for children, adults, and teens. Some of these programs are in languages other than English. Some are music programs. These programs are free. You do not need a library card to attend programs or use material at any of the libraries.

Tool Lending Library

If you live in Berkeley, or own real estate property in Berkeley, and you are over 18 years old, you can borrow tools from the Tool Lending Library with your library card.
