April 23, 2014 - 6:30pm-7:30pm (ended)
Love George and Ira? Join us for a free lecture and music program on the Gershwin brothers and the Broadway Musical on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 pm at the Claremont Branch Library at 2940 Benvenue at Ashby.
Tim will perform and play songs from the Gershwin cannon including 'S Wonderful" and Do Do Do, as well as selections from Porgy & Bess, and other works by the Gershwin team. He'll discuss their contribution to American popular music and give a behind-the-scenes look at how they crafted their music and words seamlessly together.
Tim will also explore the work of other great composers from that era, including Yip Harburg, Somewhere Over The Rainbow, Brother Can You Spare A Dime?, Jerome Kern; 'Ol Man River, and Irving Berlin; Cheek To Cheek.
The work of all these composers illustrates one central theme: The evolution of the Broadway musical from its vaudeville origins to the present-day model that integrates song and dance with storyline. As in his other programs, Tim will encourage audience members to celebrate our musical heritage by singing along with him.
