Teen Review by Molly

They Never Came Back
By Caroline B. Cooney
Type of book: general fiction, mystery
Rating: 5 stars

This book is an excellent read about a young troubled girl trying to figure out whether her parents loved her or their money more. It is thrilling and mysterious, yet also very sad. I thought that the way Caroline wrote the story from two voices made it more understandable and interesting.

Heaven Looks a Lot Like the Mall
By Wendy Mass
Type of book: general fiction
Rating: 5 stars

Heaven Looks A Lot Like the Mall is a great page turner, and even though it is really sad, with a mom that wants her daughter to be perfect, and a dad that isn’t there, the book has a really good ending and it is written really well.

I Am the Messenger
By Markus Zusak
Type of book: adventure, general fiction
Rating: 5 stars

I really liked this book, and I would definitely recommend it! I Am the Messenger is about Ed Kennedy, a 19-year old cab driver who has accomplished almost nothing in his life. Stopping a bank robbery is his first notable achievement ever, and it is then that his life begins to get a little bit out of hand. He begins receiving cards in the mail, first the ace of diamonds, then clubs, spades, and finally hearts. On each card, three ‘messages’ are asked of him to deliver. Many of the messages are fine, sometimes enjoyable, but they are shadowed by the tougher, mentally challenging ones. In the end, however, he completes all of his tasks and is met with wonderful feelings of success, accomplishment, and fulfillment.

City of Thieves
By David Benioff
Historical fiction
Rating: 3.5 stars

City of Thieves takes place in Russia during the WWII German invasion. The story follows the paths of two Russians who are on an unlikely mission for a Russian colonel. It was a fairly good story with interesting insight into the tactics and methods of both sides during the German invasion of Russia. This would appeal to someone who wants a quick and enjoyable read where you don’t need to follow the story too closely.
