Berkeley is home to the founding campus of the University of California as well as to the Berkeley City College campus of the Peralta Community College system.

Berkeley Unified School District serves the public with:

School assignments in the lower grades is achieved through a system of neighborhood district and lottery. The district has several magnet schools and the high school includes several small schools and programs to which students apply for acceptance and are assigned through the aid of the same tools similar to those used to make elementary school assignments.
