Join the Art and Music Department of the Berkeley Public Library for thesecond in a series of listening parties, Mining the Library: Local DJs Dig the Music Collection, on Tuesday, December 10, at 6:30 p.m., with Rickey Vincent – author, educator, and host of KPFA’s The History of Funk program. The listening parties bring together Berkeley Public Library’s music collection and disc jockeys from Bay Area public and community radio stations. Each DJ will dig through BPL’s vast collection of vinyl records and compact discs to uncover musical gems that will expand your appreciation of a range of genres.

Join us on Saturday, December 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the Claremont Branch Library, at 2940 Benvenue and Ashby Avenue, for a free concert of improvised cello looping. Cellist and award-winning composer Ben Hamilton will offer a program of original music to delight patrons all ages. A question and answer session with the artist as well as a chance to see his tools of the trade up close will take place after the concert.

The Berkeley Public Library presents artist and author, Salma Arastu, and the Poetry of Rumi: a reading and an exhibit of original art on Saturday, December 14, 2013, 2:00 to 3:30 pm, in the 3rd Floor Community Meeting Room at the Central Library at 2090 Kittredge Street. This free program will include readings, a slideshow and examples of artist Salma Arastu’s art. She will also present her new book, Turning Rumi: Singing Verses of Love Unity and Freedom. The book will be will be available to purchase and Ms. Arastu will be available to sign copies.

(1) Resume and Cover Letter Workshop on Monday November 25th at 6:00 pm in the 3rd Floor Community Meeting Room of the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge Street. This free workshop is led by resume expert Marilyn Tullius from Delta Strategies for Marketing. She will address how to handle gaps in employment, focusing the resume for specific jobs, common dilemmas in resume writing; as well as answer individual questions. Attendees should bring copies of their current resume and cover letter for review and advice in a small group discussion setting. (2) Career Counselors from North Cities One Stop drop-in career counseling is held the fourth Wednesday of every month at 2:00. pm. in the Central Library’s Third Floor Electronic Classroom at 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck in Downtown Berkeley. This month’s session takes place Wednesday, November 27th. Counselors will provide assistance with job search strategies, social networking, creating or improving a resume, interviewing, salary negation and more.

Effective December 1, 2013, the Board of Library Trustees (BOLT) approved proposed changes to the lending rules at all Berkeley Public Library locations. To make it easier to remember when items are due all items can be checked out for the same length of time and for the same number of renewals.

Weary of visas, long lines and traveling? Come to the Central Berkeley Library 3rd floor Community Meeting Room located at 2090 Kittredge Street and Shattuck Avenue on Saturday December 7, 2013 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for a free entertaining and educational talk by collector Joseph Fisher. He will share samples of colorful Javanese art discuss its significance. In addition, a free public exhibition: Traditional Art of Java: Batiks, Puppets & More will be display on the 2nd floor of the Central Library from November 26 to December 26, 2013.

The South Branch Library and the Tool Lending Library are offering a Plumbing Basics class taught by Jac Weber of Women’s Plumbing Repair. This free program is on Saturday, December 7, 2013. It runs from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon in the South Branch Meeting Room at 1901 Russell Street at Martin Luther King, Jr. Way and is open to everyone, with a special invitation to mothers, grandmothers, daughters and sisters. Bay Area architect and photographer, Richard Christiani will speak about his experiences photographing the people and landscapes of the Himalayas at a free event on Sunday, December 1st at 2:00 p.m. in the 3rd floor Community Meeting Room of the Central Library. The photography exhibition will be on display from November 25th through February 2nd in the Catalog Lobby on the first floor of the Central Library, 2090 Kittredge at Shattuck, downtown Berkeley.
