Islamic Art Exhibit: Women in Islam at Berkeley Public Library Berkeley, January 23, 2015—Islamic Art Exhibit presents a group art exhibition on the theme Women in Islam at the Central Library from February 9 – April 19, 2015. Meet the artists and learn about their work during an artists’ reception on Saturday, February 14 at 2:00 pm in the third floor Community Meeting Room of the Central Library. Women in Islam highlights the rights, status and accomplishments of Muslim women through the visual arts.

You are warmly invited to come say your goodbyes, share a memory, and even take a picture with the Brushmobile and perhaps some of our Art Dog props.

Artwork is on display in the Kittredge Street windows and on the first, second and fifth floors of the library. Berkeley CA, December 30, 2014—Berkeley resident and author Jeff Chang shares his insights on Saturday January 31, 2015 at 11:00 am the Central Library’s third floor community meeting room. He will discuss his new book, Who We Be: The Colorization of America, released by St. Martin's Press in October 2014. Jeff Chang has written extensively on culture, politics, the arts and music. Who We Be remixes comic strips and contemporary art, campus protests and corporate marketing campaigns, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Trayvon Martin into a powerful, unusual and timely cultural history of the idea of racial progress. Berkeley, December 29, 2014—Join the Berkeley Public Library’s Claremont Branch Book Club in discussing To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Our book club meets 6:30 - 7:45 pm on Wednesday, January 21, 2015 at the Claremont Branch. Then come back to view this classic film starring Gregory Peck, on Saturday, January 24 at 3:00 pm. Originally published in 1960, To Kill a Mockingbird became a best-seller, won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961 and was made into an Academy Award-winning film. Lee’s only published novel, with its memorable characters, layered meaning, powerful themes and vivid depiction of racism in the Depression-era South make for a great evening’s conversation and an afternoon’s viewing.

Rescheduled: Earl Scheelar and Zenith New Orleans Jazz Band Bring the Sounds of New Orleans to Berkeley Public Library’s Claremont Branch Berkeley, December 12, 2014—Earl Scheelar and the Zenith Jazz Band perform on Thursday, January 8, from 4:00 pm-5:00 pm at the Claremont Branch of the Berkeley Public Library, at 2940 Benvenue @ Ashby in Berkeley. Earl Scheelar has led several bands, composed, and played coronet and clarinet for over 60 years. Founded in the1980s, the Zenith Jazz Band plays throughout the Bay Area and records their version of traditional jazz favorites. This concert will have you dancing in the stacks!
